Ibrahima Konaté has officially been presented as a Real Madrid player after completing his move from Liverpool.
The France international defender was unveiled at Real Madrid’s training complex on Thursday, August 20, following the agreement that took him to the Spanish giants after his Liverpool contract expired.
Real Madrid had officially announced the agreement on June 18, confirming that Konaté would join the club on a four-year contract running until June 30, 2030.
Liverpool also confirmed that Konaté would leave Anfield following the expiration of his contract after five seasons at the club.
At today’s presentation, Konaté expressed his excitement about fulfilling a childhood ambition of playing for Real Madrid.
He recalled receiving a Real Madrid shirt from his older brother when he was young and said the moment had contributed to his long-standing dream of playing for the club.
The 27-year-old defender signed the contract in the presence of Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez and honorary president José Martínez Pirri.
He was presented with the traditional club gifts, including a replica of the stadium, a watch and a shirt bearing his name and the number 16.
Konaté arrives at Madrid following five seasons at Liverpool, where he made 183 appearances and won the Premier League, FA Cup, two Carabao Cups and the Community Shield.
His departure from Liverpool followed the expiration of his contract, meaning Real Madrid secured his services without paying a transfer fee. Spanish media have described the move as part of Madrid’s recent strategy of acquiring high-level players at the end of their contracts.
The French defender joins a Real Madrid squad undergoing significant change under returning manager José Mourinho.
Mourinho was formally reintroduced as Real Madrid coach on August 18, signing a contract through June 2029.
Real Madrid have also added other notable players during the summer window, including Bernardo Silva, Marc Cucurella and Denzel Dumfries, while completing the major signing of Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig.
Konaté’s arrival is particularly important because of Madrid’s defensive concerns.
The club experienced significant injury problems among its defenders last season, and Konaté’s physical strength and experience are expected to provide additional depth and competition.
He arrives after a strong spell at Liverpool, where he established himself as an important central defender.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have had to reorganise their defence following his departure and have already moved to bring in additional defensive cover. Reuters reported that new manager Andoni Iraola has faced defensive challenges following the departures and injuries within the squad.
The move therefore represents an important transition for both clubs.
For Konaté, it is the beginning of a new chapter at one of the world’s most decorated clubs.
For Real Madrid, it is another significant addition to Mourinho’s rebuilding project.
The defender has now made his ambition clear: he wants to compete for major trophies and establish himself at the heart of the Real Madrid defence.
