The Chief of Defence Staff has assured military retirees of efforts towards addressing their concerns over consequential pension adjustments following protests in Abuja.

Retired military personnel staged a protest at the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday over the non-implementation of pension adjustments linked to salary increases approved for serving personnel.

The retirees argued that increases in the salaries of serving military personnel should be accompanied by corresponding adjustments to their pensions.

The protest followed concerns that the salary increases approved by the Federal Government had not been reflected in the pensions of retired personnel.

Retired Colonel Innocent Azubike, one of the leaders of the retirees, had earlier said the group was demanding what it considered its constitutional entitlement.

The retirees also raised concerns that failure to adjust pensions could create significant disparities between personnel of the same rank who retired at different times.

Reports from the protest said the demonstrators gathered near the Ministry of Defence in Abuja carrying placards demanding implementation of the outstanding adjustments.

The protest has now prompted an assurance from the military leadership that the concerns of the retirees will be communicated to the appropriate authorities.

The development is likely to keep pressure on the government over the welfare of retired military and security personnel.
