Peter Obi’s campaign photographer, Esther Umoh, has alleged that suspected thugs attacked and blocked the convoy of the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate during his visit to Benue State.
Umoh alleged that an aide to Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, responsible for youth development, led the group that disrupted Obi’s movement.
The incident reportedly occurred as Obi visited the state, with his convoy allegedly prevented from accessing parts of the community where he was scheduled to pay a condolence visit.
Obi subsequently criticised the incident, describing the alleged obstruction as unacceptable and saying his team had encountered resistance while attempting to reach the affected community.
Reports from multiple Nigerian media outlets confirmed that Obi’s convoy was blocked during the visit, although allegations concerning the identity and political affiliation of those involved remain matters of dispute.
Umoh, who shared footage of the incident online, alleged that the attackers were connected to an aide of Governor Alia.
The allegation has not independently established that the governor’s aide ordered or participated in the alleged attack.
The development has nevertheless triggered fresh political tension in Benue, particularly as political parties and presidential candidates intensify mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
Obi’s visit to Benue was part of his wider engagement with communities and political stakeholders ahead of the election.
