The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has challenged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to a public debate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Adebayo made the challenge during an interview on TVC, where he questioned the Federal Government over the economic impact and management of funds associated with the removal of the petrol subsidy.
The SDP candidate repeatedly asked where the resources saved from subsidy removal had gone, while also demanding greater accountability over government spending on security, compressed natural gas (CNG) initiatives and electricity.
“Where is the money? Where is the money you saved from subsidies that never existed? Where are the trillions for security? Where is the CNG? Where is electricity?” Adebayo asked.
He argued that Nigerians should be able to question political leaders over their record in office and the management of public resources.
Adebayo also criticised the country’s economic management, including the handling of the naira, productivity and employment, while presenting his own political platform as an alternative ahead of the 2027 election.
The SDP candidate has previously promised major reductions in fuel prices and other reforms if elected president, saying his administration would focus on lowering the cost of living and improving economic opportunities.
He said political leaders seeking another term should be prepared to publicly defend their record before Nigerians.
The call for a debate comes as political activity surrounding the 2027 presidential election intensifies, with opposition parties increasingly using economic performance, insecurity and the cost of living as central campaign issues.
