The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has promised to provide Nigerian households with between 11 and 15 kilowatts of solar power within 11 months if elected president in 2027.
Adebayo made the pledge during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he outlined his proposed strategy for addressing Nigeria’s longstanding electricity challenges.
The SDP candidate said his administration would pursue large-scale deployment of solar energy while developing local capacity to manufacture solar panels within Nigeria.
He also proposed training Nigerians in the installation, operation and maintenance of solar power systems, with the broader objective of creating jobs while expanding electricity access.
Adebayo’s proposal comes against the backdrop of persistent challenges in Nigeria’s electricity sector, including unreliable supply, high energy costs and inadequate generation and distribution infrastructure.
The candidate said his approach would seek to reduce dependence on the existing electricity grid by making households increasingly capable of generating their own power.
He is expected to make electricity reform a central component of his 2027 campaign as political parties begin to intensify preparations for the presidential election.
Adebayo previously attracted attention with his pledge to reduce petrol, cooking gas and aviation fuel prices to N200 within his first year in office if elected.
