Veteran journalist and former presidential aspirant, Dele Momodu, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alleging the party has been overtaken by anti-democratic forces. In a strongly worded letter dated July 17, 2025, Momodu accused unnamed actors within and outside the PDP of orchestrating what he described as a daylight hijack of the party’s structure.

Addressed to the chairman of his local ward in Ihievbe, Owan East LGA of Edo State, the resignation took immediate effect. Momodu said his decision was driven by a need to uphold democratic values, which he claims have been systematically eroded in the PDP.

“The party has become a mere carcass in the grip of individuals who have no respect for internal democracy,” he said, adding that remaining in the party under such conditions would amount to endorsing illegitimacy.

Momodu, who contested the PDP’s presidential ticket in the 2023 general elections, expressed disappointment in the direction the party has taken. He described his exit as both a moral and political obligation.

“It is, therefore, honourable to abandon the carcass of the party to them while the majority of us earnestly sign up with the new coalition party known as the African Democratic Congress,” he stated.

While bidding farewell, he expressed gratitude to party members who supported him throughout his time in the PDP. “I will forever treasure the kind support you gave me at all times,” he noted.

His defection comes amid growing turbulence within the PDP, as a wave of high-profile exits and internal grievances continue to raise concerns about the party’s future ahead of the 2027 elections. Allegations of candidate imposition, weakened structures, and loss of grassroots influence have become recurring complaints among aggrieved members.
