Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has reaffirmed his administration’s support for the Federal Government’s National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode Project, describing the initiative as an important step towards improving digital addressing and public service delivery.

Oyebanji, represented by the state’s programme focal person, Olusanmi Akintobi, spoke at a stakeholder engagement and inception workshop on the national postcode project and the statewide Enterprise Addressing Management Systems in Ado-Ekiti.

The governor commended the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) for selecting Ekiti as one of the pioneer states for the initiative, which aims to modernise the country’s addressing infrastructure.

According to the account provided, Oyebanji said the project could address longstanding limitations associated with the conventional postcode system, under which numerous homes and businesses may share a general postal area code.

The Federal Government launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System on October 1, 2026, through NIPOST. The system assigns an 11-character alphanumeric postcode linked to the geographic location of an addressable building.

How the Digital Postcode System Works

The new system is designed to provide individual buildings with more precise digital addresses, potentially making it easier to identify homes, businesses, offices, schools and other locations.

Unlike a broad postcode that may cover a large neighbourhood, a unique digital postcode can help distinguish one property from another.

Such a system could be particularly useful in communities where street names, house numbering and conventional addressing systems are incomplete or inconsistent.

Potential Benefits for Businesses and Public Services

Improved addressing infrastructure can support several areas of economic and public activity.

For delivery companies and online retailers, more precise addresses could reduce failed deliveries, delays and the costs associated with locating customers.

Emergency responders could also benefit from more accurate location information when responding to medical emergencies, fires and security incidents.

Financial institutions and other businesses may find the system useful for address verification, while public agencies could use more reliable location data for planning and service delivery.

However, the scale of these benefits will depend on how widely the system is adopted, the accuracy of its underlying data and the ability of businesses and public institutions to integrate it into their operations.

Ekiti’s Role in the National Initiative

Ekiti’s participation as a pioneer state offers an opportunity to demonstrate how digital addressing can be integrated into state-level administration and commercial services.

The stakeholder engagement and ground-truthing exercise are intended to support the development and validation of address information.

For the initiative to achieve lasting results, coordination among NIPOST, state governments, local authorities, businesses and residents will be important.

The project represents a step towards more precise digital addressing in Nigeria, although its long-term impact will depend on implementation, public awareness and sustained adoption.
