Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and fined €255 by the Portuguese Football Federation following a disciplinary case linked to his departure from the national team camp.

The federation’s disciplinary council announced the sanctions on Monday, October 19, 2026, after upholding a charge against the 41-year-old forward over his abrupt exit from the squad.

The incident reportedly followed a disagreement with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus over Ronaldo’s role in the team.

Ronaldo left the national team camp on September 30 after becoming dissatisfied with his treatment during preparations for an international fixture. Reports said the disagreement arose after he was not selected to start against Norway and remained an unused substitute.

The forward reportedly felt aggrieved after warming up without being introduced during the match, although the coach disputed the suggestion that he had made a prior commitment about Ronaldo’s playing time.

The disciplinary council ruled that Ronaldo had violated the relevant regulations governing conduct within the national team setup and imposed the suspension and financial penalty.

It was not immediately clear how the suspension would affect his future international appearances or whether time already served under a provisional suspension would count towards the 30-day sanction.

The development adds a disciplinary complication to the international career of one of football’s most prominent players, who holds Portugal’s record for international appearances.

Despite the dispute, the Portuguese Football Federation’s leadership has indicated that the door remains open for Ronaldo’s return after the disciplinary process.

The case highlights the authority of national football associations to enforce team conduct rules, even when the player involved is a major figure in the sport.
