The Federal Government has announced plans to achieve round-the-clock electricity supply in three energy zones across Nigeria as part of efforts to strengthen industrial production, stimulate economic growth and improve power availability.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi-Tegbe, disclosed the plan on Thursday in Kano during the inauguration of the Walambe 2×40MVA, 132/33kV transmission substation.

The facility was among four electricity projects inaugurated in the state, underscoring the government’s stated commitment to expanding and strengthening the country’s power infrastructure.

According to the minister, the plan to provide 24-hour electricity in selected energy zones is intended to support businesses that depend on a reliable power supply for their daily operations.

Consistent electricity remains a major concern for Nigerian manufacturers, small businesses and other commercial operators, many of whom rely on generators and alternative energy sources to maintain production during supply interruptions.

The additional costs associated with self-generation can place pressure on businesses, affect operating margins and increase the cost of goods and services.

A dependable electricity supply could help reduce these pressures, improve productivity and encourage investment in energy-intensive industries.

The inauguration of the Walambe transmission substation also highlights the importance of transmission infrastructure in delivering electricity from generation facilities to distribution networks and, ultimately, consumers.

However, achieving uninterrupted power supply will require coordination across the electricity value chain, including generation, transmission and distribution. Adequate maintenance, investment, reliable gas supply to thermal power plants and improvements in grid stability will also be important.

The government has not, in the information provided, specified the three energy zones targeted for round-the-clock supply, the implementation timeline or the detailed measures through which the target will be achieved.

Further details on the programme are expected to clarify how the initiative will translate into more reliable electricity for households, businesses and industrial users.
