Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national football team, the Flamingos, will face Mexico in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco as they continue their pursuit of the tournament title.

The knockout fixture is scheduled for Thursday, October 29, following Nigeria’s second-place finish in Group B, where the team collected six points from three matches.

The Flamingos secured their place in the knockout stage with an impressive 3-1 victory over defending champions North Korea in their final group fixture, giving the Nigerian side renewed confidence ahead of the encounter with Mexico.

The result demonstrated the team’s ability to respond after an inconsistent start to the competition and maintain its challenge for a place in the quarter-finals.

Flamingos Recover to Reach Knockout Stage

Nigeria, coached by Hakeem Busari, began the group stage with a 2-1 defeat to Poland before recovering with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico.

The team then produced its strongest performance of the group campaign against North Korea, scoring three goals to secure qualification for the Round of 16.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 15th minute, giving Nigeria an early advantage.

Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the lead in the 38th minute, strengthening the Flamingos’ position before the interval.

Nigeria extended its advantage in the 56th minute when Kanyinsola Yusuf converted a superb free-kick to make it 3-0.

North Korea subsequently scored a late consolation from the penalty spot, but the goal did little to change the outcome as the Nigerian team secured all three points.

The victory was particularly significant because North Korea entered the match as the defending champions, making the result an important confidence boost for the Flamingos.

Mexico Present Next Challenge

Mexico also progressed to the knockout stage after finishing second in Group F with six points.

The Mexican side began its campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Spain but responded with a 3-1 victory over Chile before completing its group-stage fixtures with a 1-0 win against Australia.

Both teams therefore enter the knockout contest after recovering from opening defeats and recording consecutive victories to strengthen their campaigns.

The meeting will provide Nigeria with an opportunity to build on its performance against North Korea and move closer to the latter stages of the competition.

However, the knockout format leaves little room for mistakes, with qualification for the quarter-finals dependent on the outcome of a single match.

Nigeria Target Another Deep Tournament Run

The Flamingos will be seeking to improve on their historical performances at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria finished third at the 2022 edition in India, establishing one of the team’s strongest performances in the competition.

The upcoming match against Mexico will therefore represent an important test of the squad’s progress and ability to compete against strong international opposition.

For Busari and his players, the immediate objective will be to maintain the attacking confidence demonstrated against North Korea while improving the consistency required to advance through the knockout rounds.

A victory over Mexico would secure Nigeria a place in the quarter-finals and keep the Flamingos’ hopes of winning the 2026 tournament alive.
