Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has suspended his Special Adviser on Oil and Gas, Felix Osemwengie Isere, over allegations of unauthorized fundraising tied to a proposed oil and gas summit in the state.

The development was confirmed on Tuesday through an official statement from the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhilor, who described the fundraising as a breach of official procedure. According to the statement, the governor has not only suspended Isere but also ordered an immediate halt to the planned summit, which was initially scheduled for August 7.

Isere has been directed to refund all monies already collected from donors and sponsors in connection with the event. The state government further warned individuals and corporate bodies to desist from any form of engagement or financial transactions with the suspended adviser.

Though specific details of the fundraising activities were not disclosed, sources familiar with the matter suggested that the adviser acted without clearance from the appropriate government channels. The incident has raised concerns over transparency and internal checks within the administration.

This is the first major disciplinary action under Governor Okpebholo’s leadership, and it comes at a time when his government is attempting to position Edo State as an emerging hub for oil and gas investment. The suspension may be seen as a firm move to uphold integrity and prevent reputational damage ahead of future public-private initiatives.

The cancelled summit was expected to bring together industry stakeholders and investors to explore opportunities in the state’s energy sector. With the event now shelved, observers say the government will need to work harder to reassure potential partners of its commitment to due process and accountability.

Governor Okpebholo’s swift action sends a strong message about his administration’s intolerance for misconduct, especially in matters involving public trust and private investment. It also reinforces the importance of strict adherence to official procedures, particularly when state resources and public perception are involved.

As of the time of this report, there is no indication whether further disciplinary measures or investigations will follow. However, the state government has made it clear that any future infractions of this nature will be dealt with decisively.
