In a major operation targeting illegal mining activities, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested eleven individuals — seven Chinese nationals and four Nigerians — in Akwa Ibom State for engaging in unauthorised mineral extraction.

The arrests were made on Thursday, July 24, in Emem-Asuk, a coastal community in Eastern Obolo Local Government Area. The EFCC’s Uyo Zonal Directorate led the raid after receiving intelligence reports on ongoing illicit mining in the area.

Among those taken into custody are Chinese nationals identified as Yang Chaobao, Zhong Dun Yi, Cheng Jiang, Zhong Dun Long, Pan Peiming, Lai Yiping, and Zhu Lekun. They were arrested alongside Nigerians David Israel (18), Jonah Bartholomew Jim (24), Samuel Samuel Timothy (20), and a 23-year-old woman, Comfort Gabriel Ajaga, who served as the group’s translator.

According to EFCC officials, the group had already begun mining operations at one site and was in the process of establishing equipment at a second location when agents moved in. The mineral in question is ilmenite, commonly referred to as “black sand,” a valuable material used in the production of titanium and industrial alloys.

During interrogation, Ajaga stated that her role was limited to translation. “I’m a student of the Chinese language at a learning center in Anambra State. I was only helping with communication,” she explained.

Investigators allege that none of the suspects possessed the necessary permits or licences to mine in the region. The EFCC has confirmed that they will face prosecution once investigations are concluded.

Illegal mining has become a growing concern in Nigeria, not only for its environmental consequences but also for its economic implications. The EFCC says it remains committed to clamping down on operators who exploit the country’s mineral resources without authorization.
