A 300-level student of Bayero University, Kano, has been stabbed to death by suspected phone thieves in an incident that has sparked outrage and fear within the university community. The victim, identified as Umar Abdullahi Hafiz, was attacked at his residence in the Dorayi area of Kano metropolis earlier this week.

University officials confirmed that arrangements have been made to transport his body to his hometown in Zaria, Kaduna State, where he will be laid to rest. The institution’s Director of Public Affairs, Lamara Garba, described the killing as a tragic loss and confirmed that a manhunt has been launched for those responsible.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas vowed that the university will work closely with security agencies to ensure the attackers are brought to justice. He appealed for calm among students and staff, assuring them of the institution’s ongoing commitment to their safety and security.

Residents of Kano say the attack reflects a worrying surge in violent phone snatching incidents across the city. Once considered a petty crime, the practice has now become a daily menace, with many cases ending in the deaths of innocent victims.

The killing of Hafiz has once again drawn attention to the urgent need for stronger security measures in Kano, particularly around student-populated areas, to curb the rising tide of violent street crimes.
