A tragic accident in Lagos has claimed one life after a speeding Toyota Highlander SUV crashed into a commercial bus that was illegally parked along the busy Volkswagen–Mile 2 corridor.

The impact of the collision was so severe that the SUV driver died instantly, officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed. The SUV, with registration number APP 150 EY, rammed into a T4 bus (registration KJA 328 XH) that had stopped unlawfully by the roadside to pick up passengers.

LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, explained that preliminary investigations showed the Highlander lost control while moving at high speed before striking the stationary bus. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, removed the body from the wreckage, and secured the accident spot. The deceased was later handed over to the Ojo Police Division, who transferred the remains to C-Niger Mortuary, Abule Ado. Both vehicles have since been towed for further investigation.

General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the victim’s family, describing the incident as both tragic and preventable. He strongly condemned reckless driving and the widespread practice of commercial bus drivers stopping at unauthorized points to pick up passengers, calling it a leading cause of road fatalities in Lagos.

Bakare-Oki also cautioned private motorists against speeding and stressed the need for regular vehicle checks, particularly on braking systems, before embarking on any journey.

“The sanctity of human life must never be endangered by carelessness on our highways,” he said, adding that LASTMA will continue to step up enforcement and intensify public awareness campaigns to reduce avoidable crashes.

The incident has reignited public debate about reckless driving, poor enforcement of traffic laws, and the dangers posed by indiscriminate bus stops across Lagos.
