A significant group of politicians from Ayedire Local Government Area in Osun State has formally left the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The defection, led by Tunji Ogunrinu, was facilitated by Omoluabi Progressives, a political group supported by ADC’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola.
Ogunrinu explained that their decision to exit PDP stemmed from dissatisfaction with the party’s internal management and the failure to reward loyal members. Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Abdulganiyu Akeem emphasized that the people of Osun deserve better governance, urging citizens to rise and seek leadership that prioritizes their welfare.
Gbenga Ogunkanmi, a former member of the Osun State House of Assembly representing Ayedire Constituency, played a key role in the defection. He described the defectors as influential political figures and grassroots mobilizers who would bring experience and strength to ADC’s ranks in the state. Meanwhile, Azeez Adesiji, chairman of Omoluabi Progressives, welcomed the newcomers, assuring them of full integration into the party’s structures.
However, the PDP in Osun quickly distanced itself from the defectors. Spokesperson Oladele Bamiji stated that those who left were unknown to the party leadership and emphasized that genuine PDP members with grievances are aware of official channels to seek redress. “We do not recognize the defectors. PDP remains a strong party with solid grassroots presence across Osun State,” Bamiji said, reinforcing the party’s continued influence despite the departure of these members.
The defection highlights ongoing political realignments in Osun State, reflecting dissatisfaction among some PDP members and the growing appeal of ADC as an alternative platform for local political actors.
