Zamfara State is once again gripped by fear as coordinated attacks by armed gangs over the past 48 hours have left communities in panic. Residents report multiple abductions, widespread property looting, and mass displacement, with many villagers forced to abandon their homes in search of safety. The violence reportedly began in Yan Uku community, Garbadu Ward, Talata Mafara Local Government Area, before spreading to nearby settlements including Farin Dutse. Witnesses described the attacks as sudden and meticulously timed, leaving locals vulnerable and terrified.
One resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, said his older brother, Muhammadu Lakada, was abducted on Tuesday evening after returning from the market. “This is the second time in a year they have taken him. Yesterday, they also took his son and our neighbor, Lauwali. His son was released, but my brother was told to return with a phone number,” he explained. The resident added that Lakada had already been robbed days earlier, losing his shoes, cap, and new clothes before the attackers returned for the abduction.
The renewed wave of violence has sparked mass displacement, as villagers flee to neighboring towns or even leave the state entirely to avoid further attacks. Reports indicate that the terrorists struck again on Wednesday evening in broad daylight, raiding Farin Dutse and surrounding settlements around 5 p.m., abducting more people and forcing them into the bush without resistance. “Most of the villagers have already fled. Bandits were spotted in nearby areas, prompting residents to abandon their homes. Many will not sleep in their houses tonight,” another resident said.
Residents continue to express frustration at the apparent absence of security forces, describing a situation where armed groups operate freely and entire communities live in fear. The ongoing attacks have effectively turned locals into displaced persons within their own state, uncertain when or where the next assault may occur. Attempts to reach the Zamfara State Police Command for comment were unsuccessful, as Spokesman Yezid Abubakar did not respond to calls or messages at the time of reporting.
