Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, has entered a new phase of leadership as the Edo State Government confirmed the appointment of Professor Eunice Omonzejie as the institution’s substantive Vice Chancellor. The announcement was made on Monday by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhilor, who disclosed that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved her appointment after receiving a shortlist of three candidates recommended by the university’s Governing Council.

Professor Omonzejie, who has spent many years as a scholar in the Department of Modern Languages, is highly regarded for her expertise in French and Francophone African Literatures. Her academic work extends beyond literature into African and Francophone studies, gender issues, and cultural research. Over the years, she has distinguished herself as a prolific researcher, author, and editor whose contributions continue to shape discourse in her field.

Her impact on campus life has also been felt through leadership and advocacy. She once served as President of the Ambrose Alli University chapter of the National Association of Women Academics, where she championed mentorship, research opportunities, and support for women in academia. Her publications further underline her influence in scholarship, including co-editing works such as French Language in Nigeria: Essays in Honour of UFTAN Pacesetters and Language Matters in Contemporary West Africa. She also authored the book Women Novelists in Francophone Black Africa: Views, Reviews and Interviews, which remains a notable reference in African literary studies.

According to Ikhilor, her appointment is both a recognition of her academic excellence and an acknowledgment of her administrative capabilities. The government expressed confidence that Professor Omonzejie will bring her wealth of knowledge and experience to bear in advancing the university’s vision of producing world-class graduates while driving research and innovation that will benefit the state and beyond.

For several years, Ambrose Alli University has been under the leadership of acting Vice Chancellors as the state implemented reforms within the institution. The most recent acting VC, Professor Olowo Samuel, had steered the university until Monday’s announcement marked the transition to substantive leadership.

With this new appointment, many within the academic community see Professor Omonzejie’s emergence as a significant milestone, not just for Ambrose Alli University, but also for women in higher education. Her tenure is expected to usher in a new era of progress, innovation, and inclusive leadership at the university.
