The Federal Government has announced new measures aimed at making homeownership more accessible and affordable for low-income Nigerians. The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, disclosed this during the 4th Amadeo Business Summit 4.0 held in Enugu, themed “Thriving In Times Like These.” He explained that the government, through the National Social Housing Fund, is developing a new financial framework that will allow ordinary Nigerians to own homes without facing financial strain.
Dangiwa said the initiative is structured around affordability-based pricing, ensuring that no Nigerian spends more than one-third of their income on housing. According to him, this approach is designed to create a fair system where every citizen, regardless of social class, can own a home and live in dignity. He added that the government plans to establish building materials manufacturing hubs across all six geopolitical zones to stabilise prices, create jobs, and reduce the country’s reliance on imported materials. The minister described these efforts as practical steps towards economic inclusion and a strong demonstration of the administration’s renewed commitment to national development.
Highlighting the ministry’s broader strategy, Dangiwa revealed a new partnership with the Know This Nigeria Network under the Renewed Hope National Homeownership and Housing Development Campaign. The collaboration, he said, is a nationwide movement designed to close the gap between federal housing policies and state-level implementation while promoting key land reforms across Nigeria. The minister explained that through this initiative, the ministry will work with state governments to establish permanent advisory structures that will help housing agencies and institutions access both local and international opportunities beyond political transitions.
He noted that the Renewed Hope campaign will empower citizens with knowledge and access to homeownership opportunities under the government’s new housing framework. The programme, according to Dangiwa, will officially kick off later this month in Katsina State before expanding to other parts of the country. He emphasised that the campaign represents a long-term vision to make housing more inclusive, sustainable, and equitable for every Nigerian, particularly those in low-income brackets.
Providing an update on current projects, the minister disclosed that more than 10,000 housing units are presently under construction across the country. These homes, he explained, are designed as fully serviced communities where families can live, work, and thrive comfortably. In addition, Dangiwa stated that through the National Urban Renewal and Slum Upgrade Programme, the ministry plans to transform over 150 communities by turning informal settlements into modern neighbourhoods equipped with roads, drainage systems, clean water, and proper sanitation. He stressed that these projects represent more than physical structures, describing them as tangible expressions of hope, empowerment, and dignity for the Nigerian people.
In a goodwill message, the Acting Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Mrs. Chinenye Anosike, said that thriving in challenging economic conditions requires resilience, innovation, and collaboration. She noted that despite fiscal and operational challenges facing public institutions, the Federal Mortgage Bank remains committed to transforming its systems, strengthening partnerships, and adopting technology-driven solutions to deliver better services to Nigerians.
Anosike revealed that the bank is leveraging digital platforms to enhance customer experience, reduce processing time, and ensure that contributors to the National Housing Fund enjoy transparent and efficient service delivery. She added that the bank offers a range of products such as NHF mortgage loans and home renovation loans, through which more than 137,000 Nigerians have already benefited.
Delivering the keynote address, mortgage expert Dr. Femi Adewale called for greater creativity in the design of mortgage products and repayment options. He also urged stronger collaboration between the Federal Mortgage Bank and private financial institutions to make housing loans more accessible and affordable for Nigerians.
Earlier, the convener of the Amadeo Business Summit, Dr. Ugochukwu Chime, explained that the annual event serves as a platform for business leaders, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and young innovators to exchange ideas and explore new ways of driving sustainable economic growth. He said the summit provides participants with the knowledge, mindset, and tools needed to overcome challenges, harness opportunities, and build resilience in an ever-changing economic environment.
