Afrobeats superstar Omah Lay has stirred conversation online after expressing disappointment with the current state of Nigeria’s music industry, saying it has become “boring” and predictable.

The “Soso” hitmaker took to Snapchat to share his honest thoughts, lamenting that the creative energy once driving the industry appears to be fading. In a bold post, he wrote, “Una music industry is boring AF! Spirit is coming to f**k up the continent in a bit.” The singer hinted that he plans to introduce a fresh wave of sound that will redefine African music and bring back excitement to the scene.

Omah Lay’s statement comes at a time when conversations about the direction of Afrobeats have been gaining traction among fans and artists alike. Many have argued that the genre, despite its global dominance, is becoming repetitive and in need of innovation.

Echoing similar sentiments, fellow Nigerian singer Slimcase, known for his “Shaku Shaku” hit, recently voiced his concerns about the monotony in Afrobeats. He advised artists to reduce the pace of music releases, explaining that the constant flood of songs is making listeners lose interest. According to Slimcase, allowing more time between releases could reignite anticipation and creativity across the genre.

Music lovers have since taken to social media to debate Omah Lay’s comments, with some agreeing that Afrobeats needs fresh direction, while others argue that the genre’s diversity remains its strength.

For Omah Lay, however, it seems the goal is clear — to challenge the norm and spark a new movement that restores the excitement and originality that once made Nigerian music stand out globally.
