Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has taken a significant step toward improving the welfare of retired public workers by approving ₦5.8 billion for the full settlement of all outstanding gratuity payments owed to state retirees.

The move, announced on Monday by the Commissioner for Finance, Mohammed Abatcha Geidam, underscores the governor’s renewed commitment to the well-being of those who dedicated their careers to public service. Geidam revealed that, alongside the approval, Governor Buni has directed that gratuity payments be permanently included in the state’s monthly financial schedule to prevent future delays.

According to the commissioner, the decision reflects what he described as Governor Buni’s “compassionate and people-centered leadership,” aimed at restoring dignity and financial stability to Yobe’s senior citizens. “By clearing the backlog and setting up a structured monthly payment system, the governor has shown that the sacrifices of our retirees have not been forgotten,” Geidam said.

He added that the Ministry of Finance is working closely with the Office of the Head of Service to ensure that the funds are disbursed promptly, transparently, and directly to eligible retirees. The goal, he said, is to eliminate bureaucratic bottlenecks and ensure every beneficiary receives what they are due without delay.

The commissioner also highlighted that the initiative aligns with Governor Buni’s broader economic reform plan, which focuses on fiscal discipline, social responsibility, and improving the quality of life for citizens. He emphasized that retirees deserve respect, care, and timely financial recognition for their service.

“This bold move by the governor is not just about clearing debts; it’s about restoring hope and reaffirming trust in government,” Geidam noted.

The ₦5.8 billion gratuity payout is expected to inject relief into the state’s economy, particularly among retired workers who have long awaited payment. Many see the governor’s action as a morale-boosting gesture that reinforces his administration’s reputation for prioritizing the welfare of the people.
