Nigerian music star Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has shared her strong emotional attachment to Nigeria, saying that despite its challenges, she is proud to come from a country with an unmatched spirit and identity. The Afrobeats singer said what she values most about Nigeria is the unique energy of its people, describing Nigerians as resilient and full of life in ways the world can’t imitate.
Speaking on the recent episode of the 90s Baby Show, Simi noted that the Nigerian identity is so original that it cannot be duplicated. She pointed out that even when filmmakers in Hollywood attempt African portrayals, they rarely try to mimic a Nigerian accent, instead opting for East African or South African tones because the Nigerian flavour is too distinct to replicate.
Although she spoke glowingly about the pride she feels wearing the badge of “Nigerian,” Simi admitted that she wishes the country offered better living conditions and opportunities. She believes many citizens would happily remain at home if the system worked and their dreams could be achieved without migrating. According to her, leaving Nigeria isn’t a desire for most people it’s often a necessity driven by hardship.
The “Joromi” hitmaker expressed hope that Nigeria will eventually reach a place where its people can thrive rather than struggle, saying a country with so much talent, culture, and spirit deserves to give its citizens a future they don’t have to chase elsewhere.
