Taraba State is set to witness a major political realignment as Governor Agbu Kefas prepares to formally defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on November 19.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday, November 15, Kefas described the move as “a major shift and alignment” aimed at advancing the interests and future of Taraba residents.
“There is going to be a significant realignment on November 19,” he said. “I will officially transition from PDP to APC. This is a movement that relates to the destiny of the people of Taraba.”
The defection event is expected to draw prominent political figures from within the state and across the country, marking the start of a new political chapter for Taraba.
Kefas becomes the latest PDP governor to join the ruling party in 2025, following similar defections by Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Peter Mbah of Enugu, and Douye Diri of Bayelsa.
Elected in 2023 with 257,926 votes, Kefas defeated Muhammad Yahaya of the NNPP and Emmanuel Bwacha of the APC to win the governorship. His decision to leave the PDP is particularly significant as Taraba has consistently produced PDP governors since Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999, making this defection a notable political departure.
The November 19 ceremony is expected to be a high-profile event that underscores APC’s growing influence in the state and signals a potential shift in the region’s political landscape.
