The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has claimed responsibility for a deadly assault on a Nigerian army position and Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) outpost near Mainte in Borno State. The attack reportedly occurred on Monday.
According to security analyst Brant @BrantPhilip_, who shared the report on X on Wednesday, the militants killed at least 15 soldiers and militiamen, destroyed seven vehicles, razed the base, and seized several weapons.
The alleged attack has generated significant reactions on social media. Some users expressed shock at the scale of the reported casualties. Crespo wrote: “15 soldiers killed? Please tell us this is not true. We can’t continue like this, and who is leaking military movements to the public?”
Others questioned the accuracy of the report. Pforpeelyidk1 asked whether the militants targeted the entire base or only a specific position, suggesting the report might be exaggerated to support pro-Nigerian militia narratives. Meanwhile, SleazyUd criticized the military’s response, saying: “What are those soldiers doing? They are always sitting ducks waiting to defend all the time.”
The Nigerian army has not yet confirmed the details of the attack or the reported casualties.
