Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja following his diplomatic missions at two major international summits, where he represented President Bola Tinubu. Shettima attended the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, before traveling to Luanda, Angola, for the 7th African Union–European Union (AU–EU) Summit.

In Angola, Shettima delivered a statement on behalf of the President, calling for Africa to secure permanent seats with veto powers on the United Nations Security Council. He stressed that global governance structures require urgent reform to reflect the complexities of the modern world.

Speaking to European Union leaders, Shettima highlighted the importance of African-led peace and security initiatives, emphasizing that sustainable stability on the continent can only be achieved through locally driven frameworks. Nigeria, through the Vice President, reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, security, and democratic governance across Africa while collaborating with the EU to build a more stable and prosperous global order.

At the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, Shettima conveyed President Tinubu’s call for a fairer global system for managing financial flows and addressing recurring debt crises in ways that benefit all nations. During the first session, the President pointed out that current multilateral frameworks are outdated and inadequate for today’s global challenges.

In the third session, Shettima outlined two major proposals from President Tinubu: the creation of a framework ensuring that African communities hosting critical minerals benefit from value addition at the source, and the establishment of international ethical standards for Artificial Intelligence to accelerate development while mitigating potential risks.
