Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC, in a move that could reshape the political landscape of the state.
Fubara announced his decision on Monday during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
Explaining the rationale behind the shift, the governor said aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was essential for the state’s political and developmental direction.
“We cannot support President Tinubu from the sidelines. If we must stand with him, then we must do so openly and decisively,” Fubara said while declaring his move to the ruling APC.
His defection comes at a time of rising political tension in the oil-rich Niger Delta, where Rivers State has remained a focal point of national attention.
The announcement followed a confidential meeting between President Tinubu and the governor at the State House in Abuja.
The closed-door engagement, as earlier reported, took place against the backdrop of internal wrangling within the PDP and uncertainties surrounding Fubara’s continued place in the party.
