The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has intensified traffic control measures across the state with the introduction of an intelligence-led operational strategy aimed at ensuring free flow of traffic and improved safety during the yuletide period.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this on Sunday, noting that the initiative was introduced to proactively manage the spike in vehicular and human movement commonly associated with end-of-year celebrations.
Bakare-Oki explained that the festive season often brings increased traffic pressure due to concerts, carnivals, religious programmes, social gatherings and other leisure activities spread across the metropolis.
To address these challenges, he said the agency has boosted its operational readiness through the deployment of experienced officers, enhanced surveillance systems and round-the-clock monitoring of key traffic corridors. He added that event-heavy locations, commercial centres and major highways will receive special attention to prevent unnecessary congestion and promote orderly movement.
The LASTMA chief urged operators of event centres, nightclubs and lounges to provide adequate parking spaces and internal traffic arrangements capable of accommodating their patrons within designated premises. He warned that roadside parking and spillover activities disrupt traffic flow and infringe on the rights of other road users.
He also cautioned market leaders and traders against displaying goods on roadways, walkways and pedestrian paths, noting that such practices push pedestrians into traffic lanes and increase the risk of accidents and gridlock.
Bakare-Oki further advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and cautioned against speeding, reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. He noted that enforcement teams would be actively addressing violations such as illegal parking, road obstruction, speeding and impaired driving throughout the festive period.
Calling for cooperation, he urged road users to obey traffic regulations, work with traffic officers and exercise patience, stressing that collective responsibility remains key to a safe and smooth yuletide.
He also reminded residents that emergencies can be reported through LASTMA’s toll-free hotline, 0800 005 27862, adding that tow trucks and 24-hour night response teams have been deployed statewide, with particular attention to high-traffic routes including the Lekki–Ajah axis.
