Cristiano Ronaldo has reiterated his determination to reach the landmark of 1,000 career goals, while also suggesting that a return to European football remains a possibility as he continues the latter stages of his storied career.
The 40-year-old football icon boosted his career tally to 956 goals after scoring twice in Al-Nassr’s convincing 3–0 victory over Al Akhdoud on Saturday. The brace further underlined his enduring influence in front of goal despite advancing age.
Speaking at an awards ceremony in Dubai on Sunday, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United star said his passion for the game remains undiminished, stressing that his focus is on longevity rather than geography.
“My passion is still very high and I want to continue,” Ronaldo said. “It doesn’t matter where I play, whether in the Middle East or Europe. I always enjoy playing football and I want to keep going. I will reach that number [1,000 goals] for sure, if I stay free from injuries.”
Ronaldo’s goals against Al Akhdoud also took his tally for the 2025 calendar year to 40, marking the 14th different year in which he has scored 40 or more goals — a testament to his remarkable consistency across two decades at the top level.
His most prolific year remains 2013, when he netted 63 goals in all competitions for club and country, a benchmark few players in football history have approached.
While Ronaldo has previously spoken about being close to the end of his playing career, he recently told broadcaster Piers Morgan that retirement is still likely one or two years away. His latest comments, however, suggest that Europe has not been entirely ruled out as he continues to chase personal milestones and extend his legacy.
