At least nine Nigerian soldiers were killed on Monday, January 5, after their convoy struck a landmine and came under attack near Bindundul village in Borno State, security sources have confirmed.

The incident occurred along the Maiduguri–Damasak axis, close to Kareto, an area known for the presence of fighters linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). The troops were en route from Maiduguri to Damasak, the headquarters of Mobbar Local Government Area, when the explosion occurred.

According to security sources attached to the Damasak brigade, the landmine was planted by terrorists and detonated as the convoy passed through the area. Nine soldiers were reportedly killed on the spot, while five others sustained serious injuries.

A member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), Abba Kaka Tuja, who participated in the rescue operation, said the blast destroyed an armoured military vehicle. He added that the explosion was followed by gunfire from the attackers, suggesting a coordinated ambush.

The wounded soldiers were evacuated for medical treatment, while security forces were said to have reinforced the area to prevent further attacks. The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in parts of northern Borno, where insurgent groups continue to target military movements and key routes.
