Students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, took to the streets on Tuesday in protest against the recent renaming of the institution by the Oyo State Government.
The demonstration, which began earlier in the day, caused a major disruption along the Sango-Eleyele Road, leaving hundreds of motorists and commuters stranded for hours. Protesters also shut down both entrances to the school campus, bringing academic and administrative activities to a halt.
The unrest follows an announcement by Governor Seyi Makinde renaming the institution Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, in honour of the late elder statesman and former governor of the old Oyo State, who passed away at the age of 89. Olunloyo was the first indigene of Ibadan to hold the governorship position.
While some students expressed dissatisfaction over the decision, citing a lack of consultation and historical attachment to the school’s original name, others called for broader stakeholder engagement before such a major policy shift.
At the time of this report, no official response had been issued by the school management or state government regarding the students’ demands.
