The Labour Party (LP) has formally declared Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, as its National Leader, signalling a major leadership development within the opposition party.
The decision was announced in a communiqué issued by the party’s National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, following a meeting of the Labour Party’s National Working Committee (NWC) held on Wednesday. According to the party, the meeting focused on issues bordering on its stability, growth and long-term strategic direction.
“The NWC, in a unanimous decision, affirms its recognition of His Excellency, Governor Alex Chioma Otti, as the National Leader of the Labour Party,” the communiqué stated.
The party also extended goodwill to its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following his recent move to the coalition African Democratic Congress (ADC). The NWC wished Obi success in his future political pursuits and in his new political platform.
In another key resolution, the Labour Party announced the recognition of former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, as its National Chairman. The party said the decision was in line with the Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, which held that the tenure of the former chairman, Julius Abure, had expired.
The NWC urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to give full recognition to Usman and Nwokocha as the party’s legitimate national officers, in accordance with the apex court’s ruling.
“The NWC reaffirmed that all congresses and the National Convention of the party shall proceed strictly in line with the provisions of the Labour Party Constitution,” the statement added, encouraging members at all levels to actively participate in the forthcoming processes.
The party expressed appreciation to its members and the Nigerian public for their continued support, stressing that the Labour Party remains united, focused and committed to its vision of building a Nigeria anchored on equity, social justice and good governance.
