Madam Lucia Onabanjo, wife of the first civilian governor of Ogun State, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, has passed away at the age of 100.
The family announced her death in a statement released on Tuesday, January 13, by her daughter, Olubukunola Onabanjo. According to the statement, Madam Onabanjo died peacefully on Monday, January 12.
“The family of Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, former Governor of Ogun State, announces with deep sorrow, yet with gratitude to Almighty God, the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother,” the statement read.
It added that Chief (Mrs.) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo, born in 1925, was “called to glory” after a long and fulfilled life marked by faith, strength, and devotion to family.
“We thank God for her long and fulfilled life, and for the enduring legacy of love, strength, and faith she leaves behind. May her soul rest in perfect peace,” the family said.
Her late husband, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, served as Ogun State’s first civilian governor from 1979 to 1983 during Nigeria’s Second Republic. He was also a respected journalist and publisher, widely known for his influential weekly column, Ayekooto, before his death in 1990.
Madam Lucia Onabanjo is survived by children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
