China has reaffirmed its commitment to the United Nations–led international order following confirmation that it received an invitation to join US President Donald Trump’s proposed “Board of Peace.”

Speaking on Wednesday, January 21, China’s Foreign Ministry said Beijing would continue to defend the international system with the United Nations “at its core,” regardless of shifting global political dynamics.

The statement came a day after Chinese officials acknowledged that Washington had formally invited China to participate in the proposed board, which, according to its charter, is intended to resolve global conflicts and promote international stability.

China has not indicated whether it will accept the invitation. However, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stressed that the country’s long-standing position on multilateralism and international governance remains unchanged.

“No matter how the international situation changes, China firmly upholds the international system with the United Nations at its core, and international relations based on the objectives and principles of the UN Charter,” Guo told reporters in Beijing.

As the world’s second-largest economy and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, China has consistently portrayed itself as a defender of the UN system, even as it advocates reforms to make global institutions more representative of contemporary geopolitical realities.

Trump’s proposed Board of Peace has drawn mixed reactions internationally, with critics expressing concern that it could undermine or sideline existing UN mechanisms for conflict resolution.
