The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Thursday searched the residence of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

The development was disclosed by his media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, who confirmed that operatives of the anti-graft agency conducted the search earlier in the day.

El-Rufai’s lawyer, Ubong Akpan, criticised the action, describing it as unlawful and a violation of due process and his client’s fundamental rights.

In a brief statement shared online, Adekeye wrote that the former governor’s residence was searched by the ICPC.

The commission later confirmed that El-Rufai is currently in its custody.

The latest development follows reports that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) picked up the former governor shortly after he was granted bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday.

According to reports, the DSS action is linked to allegations that El-Rufai unlawfully intercepted the communications of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

As of the time of filing this report, the ICPC has not provided further details regarding the search or the specific allegations under investigation.
