Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate outlines conditions for unseating Nigeria’s president ahead of future elections.

Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has stated that any contender seeking to defeat Bola Ahmed Tinubu must possess an “impeccable” character, emphasizing integrity as a decisive factor in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Speaking during a televised interview, Baba-Ahmed argued that credibility and a clean public record would be essential for any opposition figure aiming to challenge the incumbent president in future elections.

He also reiterated his long-standing position that the Labour Party won the 2023 presidential election, while criticizing the current administration’s performance across key sectors, including the economy and security.

Baba-Ahmed further suggested that Nigeria’s political system has discouraged individuals with strong moral standing from participating actively in politics, describing this as a major setback for democratic progress. According to him, the absence of such candidates weakens the opposition’s ability to present a credible alternative.

In the same interview, he disclosed plans to exit the Labour Party, citing internal disagreements and a perceived shift from its founding principles. He indicated his intention to join the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), signaling a potential realignment ahead of the next election cycle.

The remarks come amid increasing political activity and early positioning by parties and individuals ahead of Nigeria’s next general elections, with debates intensifying over leadership quality and governance direction.

Baba-Ahmed’s comments add to the evolving political discourse, as attention gradually shifts toward the standards and alliances that may shape Nigeria’s next presidential contest.
