Movement restricted on key waterways to tackle piracy, kidnapping, and smuggling
The Nigerian Navy has announced a 13-hour daily restriction on movement along the Calabar–Oron water channel in a bid to curb rising cases of piracy, kidnapping, and smuggling in the area.
The directive applies to all maritime activities within the affected corridor and forms part of intensified security operations aimed at restoring safety on the busy route linking Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.
According to naval authorities, the measure is necessary due to repeated criminal activities targeting passengers, traders, and transport operators using the waterways. Security patrols have also been increased to enforce compliance.
The restriction is expected to remain in place as authorities monitor its impact on security along the coastal route.
