Electoral commission seeks deployment of over 1.4 million corps members ahead of polls
Fresh concerns are emerging over preparations for the 2027 general elections after the Independent National Electoral Commission reportedly declared that it cannot successfully conduct nationwide elections without the support of the National Youth Service Corps.
INEC is said to have formally requested the deployment of more than 1.4 million corps members to assist in electoral duties during the highly anticipated polls. The move highlights the enormous logistical challenge involved in organizing elections across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
For years, NYSC members have served as ad hoc electoral staff responsible for voter verification, polling unit management, and collation support. However, rising insecurity in several parts of the country has continued to fuel concerns about the safety of corps members during elections.
Political analysts say the announcement underscores the deep dependence of Nigeria’s electoral system on temporary youth workers, raising questions about whether the country should begin investing in a more permanent election management structure.
Meanwhile, Nigerians on social media have reacted sharply to the development, with many expressing fears over security risks, while others praised corps members for their continued contribution to democracy despite difficult conditions.
