Former Kogi governor moves closer to Senate ambition as corruption case continues to generate controversy

Fresh political controversy has erupted after the All Progressives Congress (APC) reportedly cleared former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, to contest for the party’s senatorial ticket despite his ongoing corruption trial involving billions of naira.

The development comes weeks after Bello publicly signalled interest in the Kogi Central Senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 elections. Reports indicate that the APC screening process paved the way for the former governor and other aspirants to participate in the upcoming party primaries.

However, the decision has sparked widespread reactions due to Bello’s ongoing legal battle with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The anti-graft agency is currently prosecuting the former governor over alleged money laundering and financial misconduct involving over N110 billion according to court filings and ongoing proceedings.

Critics argue that allowing a politician facing such serious allegations to pursue higher political office raises fresh questions about accountability within Nigeria’s political system. Supporters of the former governor, however, insist that he remains innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law.

Political observers believe the move could further intensify political tension in Kogi State as preparations for the next election cycle gradually gather momentum. With Bello still commanding significant influence within APC structures in the state, analysts say the senatorial contest may become one of the most closely watched political battles in the North-Central region.
