Ola Olukoyede moves to calm outrage after incident involving Uyo Teaching Hospital staff

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has reportedly apologized to Professor Eyo Ekpe and members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) following the controversy surrounding an incident at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH).

The apology comes after outrage trailed reports involving EFCC operatives and medical personnel at the hospital, a situation that sparked widespread criticism from health professionals and civil society groups. The incident had raised concerns over the treatment of medical workers and alleged disruption within the hospital environment.

Professor Eyo Ekpe, who serves as Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of UUTH, was among those at the center of the controversy. Members of the NMA had earlier condemned the incident and demanded explanations from the anti-graft agency, warning against actions capable of intimidating healthcare professionals.

In response to mounting reactions, Olukoyede reportedly reached out to the affected parties and expressed regret over the situation, stressing that the EFCC remains committed to professionalism and respect for institutions. The move is being seen as an attempt to ease tensions between the anti-corruption agency and Nigeria’s medical community.

The development has since sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians calling for stronger collaboration between security agencies and public institutions to avoid future confrontations capable of disrupting healthcare services.
