Argentine captain surpasses Miroslav Klose to become the highest goalscorer in World Cup history.

Lionel Messi has become the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history after scoring his 17th tournament goal during Argentina’s match against Austria.

The 38-year-old reached the landmark in the 38th minute, moving ahead of former Germany striker Miroslav Klose, whose record of 16 goals had stood as the benchmark in the competition.

Messi entered the match level with Klose after netting a hat-trick in Argentina’s opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Algeria. His latest goal ensured he became the outright record holder.

The achievement further strengthens Messi’s place among the most accomplished players in football history and adds another milestone to his World Cup journey.

Argentina’s match against Austria continued following the historic goal as attention shifted to the remainder of the tournament.
