Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has pledged to establish a functional primary healthcare centre in every ward across the country if elected president, describing accessible healthcare as a fundamental responsibility of government.
Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has vowed to ensure that every one of Nigeria’s more than 8,000 political wards has a fully functional primary healthcare centre if elected president in 2027. Obi said strengthening primary healthcare would be one of the pillars of his administration’s plan to improve healthcare delivery nationwide.
Speaking while unveiling his policy agenda, Obi said primary healthcare remains the foundation of an effective health system, lamenting that only a fraction of existing primary healthcare facilities across Nigeria are fully operational.
He pledged that within his first term, every ward would have a properly equipped and professionally managed primary healthcare centre capable of providing essential medical services to residents.
Obi also promised to expand health insurance coverage significantly and increase investment in the health sector to improve access to quality and affordable healthcare.
According to Obi, inadequate investment in primary healthcare has contributed to poor health outcomes, especially in rural communities where access to medical services remains limited.
He argued that strengthening healthcare infrastructure at the grassroots level would reduce pressure on secondary and tertiary hospitals while improving maternal and child healthcare, disease prevention and emergency medical response across the country.
The NDC presidential candidate said his administration would prioritise healthcare funding, modernise existing facilities, recruit more health workers and ensure that every ward has access to basic medical services.
He maintained that quality healthcare should not depend on where Nigerians live or their economic status, promising that healthcare reform would be central to his government’s development agenda.
Obi’s healthcare pledge adds to a series of policy proposals he has unveiled ahead of the 2027 general election, with healthcare, education, security and economic reforms featuring prominently in his campaign agenda. The proposal is expected to generate debate over funding, implementation and the future of Nigeria’s primary healthcare system.
