The Abia and Imo State Governments have launched a coordinated security operation to tackle escalating criminal activities on the Aba–Owerri expressway, a critical route linking both states.

The initiative follows a spate of violent incidents, including kidnappings and armed robbery, which have raised serious safety concerns among commuters and residents. The new security arrangement was formalised after an emergency meeting between Governor Alex Otti of Abia State and Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State on December 4 at the Imo State Government House in Owerri.

According to a statement issued by Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser to Governor Otti on Media and Publicity, the two governors approved the creation of a joint task force made up of personnel from the Army, Navy, Police, DSS, and other security agencies.

Beginning December 5, the task force will conduct uninterrupted, round-the-clock patrols along the Owerrinta–Owerri axis of the highway. Advanced surveillance equipment, including drones, will be used to monitor surrounding bushes where criminals often operate.

Ekeoma noted that Governor Otti commended Governor Uzodinma for the swift arrest of suspects linked to a recent attack on his advance team and other travelers. Both leaders, he said, have assured road users—particularly holiday returnees—that enhanced security measures are now in place to guarantee their safety.

The governors further warned that anyone caught engaging in criminal activities along the expressway will face strict consequences.
