Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy has responded to the criticism trailing his recent comments about his fans, explaining that he is dealing with private challenges while urging the public to stop misinterpreting his words.

The singer, born Damini Ogulu, came under fire after stating that he never begged anyone to become his fan and that he preferred supporters who were financially successful. His remark quickly drew backlash across social media, with many accusing him of looking down on his fanbase.

In a statement shared via his Instagram story, Burna Boy clarified that the comment was originally made jokingly during a conversation with his band members and was not directed at his followers. He said the remark was taken out of context and exaggerated online.

According to him, he is currently navigating personal struggles but has never sought sympathy from the public. He appealed to critics to allow him space, noting that he only reciprocates respect and support.

He also used the opportunity to call for an end to insecurity and conflicts in Nigeria, Congo, and Sudan, aligning himself with ongoing advocacy efforts for peace in the affected regions.

“I was joking with my band about something unrelated, and people twisted it again to say I don’t love my fans,” he wrote. “If you hate me that much, either eliminate me or leave me alone. I’m fighting my own battles quietly. I love who loves me and respect who respects me. Free Sudan, free Congo, free Nigeria.”
