Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has described his team’s emphatic victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the FIFA Club World Cup final as a defining moment—one that sets the tone for even greater ambitions in the coming season.
The Blues stunned the football world with a commanding 3–0 win at MetLife Stadium in New York on Sunday, a match that saw Cole Palmer score twice and assist Joao Pedro’s goal in front of a crowd exceeding 81,000.
Despite PSG’s status as favourites—having already won four major trophies this season, including the Champions League and a domestic treble—Chelsea dominated from start to finish in what Colwill called a “statement performance.”
“People wrote us off before the match, but we’ve always believed in our quality,” the 22-year-old said. “It wasn’t an upset. This team is capable of winning at the highest level.”
Colwill expressed confidence that the momentum from their Club World Cup success could carry Chelsea into serious contention for the Premier League and Champions League titles next season.
“I said we were going to win this tournament before it started, and people looked at me like I was crazy,” he said. “Well, I’m saying the same about our chances next season—we’re ready.”
The 2025 edition of the tournament marked the debut of FIFA’s expanded 32-team format. While the new structure has drawn mixed reactions, Colwill sees it as a major step forward.
“In time, this tournament could rival the Champions League in prestige,” he said. “We’ve made history by being the first winners in this format.”
Reflecting on the experience, Colwill highlighted the demanding schedule, sold-out venues, and diversity of opponents as key aspects of the competition’s appeal.
“It’s been intense—playing every few days in front of packed stadiums, facing teams we don’t usually get to meet. I might be saying this because we won, but I truly enjoyed it.”
Admitting he felt pressure ahead of the final, Colwill said the occasion ultimately became a career milestone.
“It was probably the biggest game I’ve played so far. I was nervous going in, but this is something I’ll look back on for the rest of my life.”
