Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has stirred conversations online after placing a $25,000 bet on Nigeria’s opening match against Tanzania at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The award-winning singer shared a screenshot of his betting slip on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, captioned, “Let’s get this W Nigeria.” The wager, placed via the Stake betting platform, predicts that both teams will score, with a potential payout of $96,564, estimated at about ₦140 million.

Davido, a known football enthusiast, has previously placed high-profile bets involving the Super Eagles. Ahead of Nigeria’s last competitive fixture against Gabon in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, he reportedly staked $10,000 on a Nigerian victory with both teams scoring. That bet, however, did not pay off after Nigeria lost the match.

Despite the setback, the singer’s confidence in the national team appears undiminished.

His latest wager has generated mixed reactions from fans on social media. While some praised his continued support for the Super Eagles, others jokingly questioned his loyalty, especially given his role as a prominent ambassador for Stake. Critics have also suggested the move was more promotional than patriotic.

Nigeria will face Tanzania’s Taifa Stars on Tuesday, December 23, at the Complexe Sportif de Fès in Morocco, as the Super Eagles begin their quest for a fourth AFCON title.

Three-time African champions Nigeria are favourites to advance from Group C, which also features Tunisia and Uganda. Led by stars such as Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, the Super Eagles boast superior pedigree and ranking, sitting 38th in the latest FIFA rankings, compared to Tanzania’s 112th position.

Tanzania have never recorded a competitive victory against Nigeria, a statistic that further fuels confidence among Nigerian supporters. However, the Super Eagles’ recent failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup has tempered expectations, leaving many fans cautiously optimistic.
