Nigerian music icon D’banj has opened up about the breakup of Mo’Hits Records, revealing that the decision to part ways was entirely driven by producer and co-founder Don Jazzy. The revelation comes more than a decade after the 2012 split that shocked the Nigerian music industry.
During a recent episode of the Mic On podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, D’banj said Don Jazzy was “100 per cent responsible” for ending the partnership. He explained that the idea to separate did not come from him, and he has no regrets about the way events unfolded.
“If I could revisit that time, I wouldn’t change a thing about my relationship with Don Jazzy. The decision to go our separate ways was his, which is why we remain on good terms,” D’banj said.
He also disclosed that after the split, Don Jazzy transferred full ownership of his music catalogue to him, including several unreleased tracks. D’banj described this as an important step in preserving the work they had created together, noting that their final joint release, Oliver Twist, achieved global recognition despite the breakup.
Reflecting on the split, D’banj said the separation allowed both artists to explore new creative paths. While he misses the collaborative magic they shared, he emphasized that the Mo’Hits era remains a defining moment in his career and a lasting legacy in Nigerian music.
