The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 37 individuals suspected of engaging in Internet fraud during a raid in Wukari, Taraba State.
The agency confirmed the operation in a statement released on Wednesday, revealing that the arrests took place in an area located behind the Federal University, Wukari. According to the EFCC, the suspects were tracked down following weeks of credible intelligence that pointed to their alleged involvement in cybercrime.
Operatives from the EFCC’s Makurdi Zonal Command led the raid, which resulted in the recovery of several items believed to have been used in the fraudulent activities. Among the seized items were two vehicles, 12 laptop computers, and 46 mobile phones.
The anti-graft commission disclosed that all the suspects are currently undergoing investigation and will be charged in court once the ongoing inquiries are concluded.
The EFCC has in recent years intensified its clampdown on Internet fraudsters, popularly known as “Yahoo boys,” across various states in Nigeria. The agency maintains that such operations are part of its commitment to combating cybercrime and protecting young Nigerians from being lured into digital scams.
