The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Sokoto State Governor and current lawmaker, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, over allegations of mismanaging public funds running into ₦189 billion.
Reliable EFCC sources told our correspondent that Tambuwal appeared at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja around 11:30 a.m. on Monday after receiving an official summons. Upon arrival, he was immediately ushered into an interrogation room where detectives began questioning him on the alleged financial misconduct.
According to investigators, the case involves suspicious large-scale cash withdrawals believed to violate the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. Details on when the transactions occurred remain unclear as the probe is still in its early stages.
Tambuwal, a prominent political figure, governed Sokoto State from 2015 to 2023. Before that, he served as Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2011 and 2015. He now represents Sokoto South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale declined to comment on the matter when contacted, citing the sensitivity of ongoing investigations.
The arrest has already generated heated discussions in political circles, with many waiting to see whether the high-profile case will lead to prosecution.
