The Federal Government has approved a ₦142 billion plan to build six ultra-modern bus terminals across Nigeria, in a bold move aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and comfort for road travelers.

The green light was given during Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Minister of Transportation, Sai’du Alkali, said the new terminals would be the first major investment in road transport infrastructure outside of traditional road construction. They will be located in Abeokuta (South-West), Gombe (North-East), Kano (North-West), Lokoja (North-Central), Onitsha (South-East), and Ewu, Edo State (South-South).

Alkali explained that these cities were chosen for their economic importance and strategic locations, adding that the absence of standard terminals has left millions of commuters relying on informal roadside boarding points. This, he said, has contributed to traffic accidents, rising crime rates, and illegal arms movement along highways.

“This is the first time the government is making such an intervention in road transport. Proper bus terminals will not only make travel safer but also help regulate the sector,” Alkali stated.

The transport ministry believes that once completed, the facilities will serve as organized hubs for interstate and regional travel, offering modern amenities while reducing the risks associated with unregulated transport stops.

In a related development, the FEC directed all ministries, departments, and agencies handling 2024 budget projects to wrap up their procurement processes by September 30, 2025.
