A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Robert Orya, a former Managing Director of the Nigeria Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), to a total of 490 years’ imprisonment following his conviction on multiple counts of fraud amounting to about ₦2.4 billion.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) confirmed the judgment in a statement released on its official X handle on Thursday. According to the anti-graft agency, Justice F.E. Messiri found Orya guilty on all 49 counts preferred against him and sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment on each count.

Orya, who served as NEXIM Bank’s Managing Director between 2011 and 2016, was prosecuted by EFCC counsel, Samuel Ugwuegbulam. The court held that the prosecution successfully established the charges beyond reasonable doubt, leading to his conviction.

“The EFCC today, February 5, 2026, secured the conviction of Robert Orya, a former Managing Director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (2011–2016), for fraud to the tune of approximately ₦2.4 billion,” the statement read.

It added that Justice Messiri of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, sentenced Orya to 10 years’ imprisonment on each of the 49-count charges after finding him guilty as charged.

The sentencing marks the culmination of a prolonged legal battle and represents one of the most significant convictions involving a former top executive of a federal financial institution in recent years.
