Renowned Nigerian filmmaker and actress Funke Akindele has set a new benchmark in African cinema as her latest movie, Behind the Scene, surpassed ₦2 billion in box office revenue, becoming the highest-grossing film in Africa’s history.

FilmOne Entertainment, a leading Nigerian film distribution company, announced on Tuesday that the movie grossed ₦2,103,039,706 within just one month of its theatrical release. The milestone makes Behind the Scene the first Nollywood and African film to cross the ₦2 billion mark in cinema earnings.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), FilmOne described the feat as historic, noting that the achievement cements Akindele’s status as Africa’s most commercially successful filmmaker. The distributor said the record positions her as the highest-grossing producer, writer, and director in West Africa’s film history.

Akindele also emerged as the first filmmaker to rank number one at the African box office for three consecutive years, further underlining her dominance in the continent’s movie industry.

Reacting to the achievement, the actress expressed gratitude in a video posted on her Instagram page on Monday evening.

“We have every reason to thank God. ₦2 billion and counting is not a joke. Ladies and gentlemen, Behind the Scene to the world,” she said.

She added, “Joy overflows, my heart is full of gratitude to God and my amazing fans. Reaching this incredible milestone and still counting would not have been possible without you. I’m deeply grateful.”

The latest success adds to Akindele’s growing list of box office triumphs and reinforces Nollywood’s expanding influence and commercial strength within the global film industry.
